Dogs

What I use and reach for most often as a dog owner

🦴
Toys
KONG Classic Dog Toy
Stuff it with peanut butter and your dog will spend 45 minutes working on it with the focus of a trauma surgeon. One of the few toys that actually holds up to serious chewing.

Clean-Up
Earth Rated Dog Poop Bags
Nobody thinks much about poop bags until one fails at the worst possible moment. These don't — thick walls, a proper seal, 270 per pack. The lavender scent actually helps.

Grooming
FURminator deShedding Tool
If you have a fluffy, heavy-shedding dog and you've never used a deshedding tool, prepare to be quietly horrified at how much undercoat was living in there. One session makes a visible difference.

Cats

Everything your feline overlord demands

💧
Hydration
Catit Flower Fountain
Cats are wired to prefer running water — it's a desert instinct. This keeps it moving, filtered, and fresh, and most cats start drinking noticeably more. Quiet enough to forget it's running.
★★★★★ 4.6 (22,000+ reviews)

🐟
Treats
INABA Churu Cat Treats
Squeeze tube, pure chicken, no fillers. Cats who've never been interested in treats suddenly discover their passion. Also invaluable for hiding pills or surviving a nail-clipping session.

🛋️
Scratching
PetFusion Cat Scratcher Lounge
Your sofa or this scratcher — not a hard choice when the scratcher looks this good. Curved cardboard, doubles as a nap surface, and actually looks okay left out in the open.

Birds

Keep your feathered friends happy and healthy

🏠
Housing
Prevue Hendryx Flight Cage
Solid wrought-iron, enough space for small birds to actually stretch their wings, and it rolls — which you'll appreciate far more than expected on cleaning day. A genuinely good setup without hidden compromises.
★★★★☆ 4.4 (4,500+ reviews)

🌾
Food
Kaytee Forti-Diet Pro Health Bird Food
Most bird owners try a few seed mixes before landing here. Nutrients are coated on the seeds so birds get their vitamins even after cracking the shells and tossing them — which they absolutely will.

Small Pets

Hamsters, guinea pigs, rabbits, and more

🛏️
Bedding
Kaytee Clean & Cozy White Bedding
Paper bedding is better than wood shavings — less dust, better absorbency, and no phenols that irritate small airways. Soft enough for burrowing, and your hamster will immediately disappear into it.
★★★★★ 4.7 (14,000+ reviews)

🥬
Food
Oxbow Essentials Guinea Pig Food
Most supermarket guinea pig foods are seed-heavy and nutritionally thin. This is timothy hay-based, fortified with vitamin C (which guinea pigs can't produce themselves), and every exotic vet recommends it.

Pet Care Guides

Things I wish someone had told me sooner — practical advice from a fellow pet owner, not a textbook

Dogs

How to Choose the Right Dog Food

With hundreds of options on the shelf, picking a dog food can feel overwhelming. Here's what actually matters.

  • Look for a named protein (chicken, beef, salmon) as the first ingredient — not "meat meal" or "by-products."
  • Match the formula to your dog's life stage: puppy, adult, or senior formulas have different nutrient balances.
  • For large breeds, choose foods with controlled calcium and phosphorus levels to protect developing joints.
  • AAFCO-approved foods meet minimum nutritional requirements — look for the statement on the bag.
  • If your dog has a sensitive stomach, switch foods gradually over 7–10 days to avoid digestive upset.
Cats

Why Your Cat Needs More Water (And How to Help)

Cats evolved in deserts and have a naturally low thirst drive — which is a problem when they eat dry kibble.

  • Cats on dry-only diets are chronically mildly dehydrated, which strains the kidneys over time.
  • Running water is more appealing to cats than still water — a fountain can double their daily intake.
  • Wet food is 70–80% water by weight, making it an easy way to boost hydration without effort.
  • Place water bowls away from food bowls — cats instinctively avoid water near their prey.
  • If your cat suddenly drinks much more or less water, it's worth a vet visit as it can signal illness.
Fish

Setting Up Your First Aquarium: The Nitrogen Cycle

The single biggest mistake new fish owners make is adding fish too soon. Here's how to do it right.

  • Fish waste produces ammonia, which is toxic. Beneficial bacteria in your filter convert it to harmless nitrate.
  • This bacterial colony takes 4–6 weeks to establish — this is called "cycling" the tank.
  • Use Seachem Prime to detoxify ammonia while your cycle completes — it buys you time without killing bacteria.
  • Test your water weekly with a liquid test kit (not strips — they're far less accurate).
  • Your tank is cycled when ammonia and nitrite both read 0 ppm. Then — and only then — add fish.
Small Pets

Guinea Pigs vs. Hamsters: Which is Right for You?

Both are popular starter pets, but they're very different animals with very different needs.

  • Guinea pigs are social and need to live in pairs or groups — a lone guinea pig is an unhappy one.
  • Hamsters are solitary and territorial — housing two together often leads to fighting.
  • Guinea pigs are diurnal (awake during the day), making them better for families with kids.
  • Hamsters are nocturnal — expect them to run their wheel at 2am with impressive dedication.
  • Guinea pigs require vitamin C supplementation (like humans, they can't produce their own).
Dogs

Loose Leash Walking: The Basics

A dog that pulls on leash makes walks miserable for everyone. The good news: it's fixable with consistency.

  • Dogs pull because it works — they get where they want to go. Stop moving the moment the leash goes tight.
  • Reward heavily when your dog walks beside you with a loose leash — make that position the best place to be.
  • A front-clip harness (like the PetSafe Easy Walk) removes the mechanical advantage of pulling instantly.
  • Keep sessions short: 5–10 minutes of focused leash training beats an hour of frustrated walking.
  • Be consistent — if you let pulling work even once, it reinforces the behaviour significantly.
Cats

Understanding Cat Body Language

Cats communicate constantly — most owners just don't know how to read it. Here's a quick decoder.

  • Slow blink = "I trust you." Slow blink back to return the compliment — it genuinely works.
  • Tail straight up = happy and confident greeting. A puffed tail = scared or threatened.
  • Ears flat sideways ("airplane ears") = overstimulated or irritated. Stop petting immediately.
  • Showing you their belly is a sign of trust — but it's usually not an invitation to touch it.
  • Chattering at birds outside is thought to be a frustrated hunting response, not aggression.
